If you’re using automotive fuel in your aircraft the FAA has issued a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) explaining the dangers to aircraft operations if the fuel contains alcohol.
Ethanol in fuel is dangerous to airplane engines and components in addition to also introducing water into the fuel system. Alcohol in fuel reduces the amount of available power, is corrosive to rubber seals, induces water into the fuel and can be responsible for vapour lock in the fuel system. Fuels that contain alcohol should be labelled accordingly but if there is any doubt the special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) outlines a simple test that can be performed to determine the presence of alcohol in fuel.
