On June 22, 2007, approximately 2330 mountain daylight time, a Mooney M20C, N6713N, impacted high tension electrical power lines about one mile north of Carbon County Regional Airport, Price, Utah. The private pilot and his passenger received fatal injuries, and the aircraft, which was owned and operated by the pilot, was destroyed by the impact and the post-crash fire. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal cross-country flight, which departed the same airport about 45 minutes earlier, was being operated in visual meteorological conditions. No flight plan had been filed. There was no report of an ELT activation.
According to witnesses who talked with the pilot, the pilot landed at the Carbon County Airport earlier in the evening, and after spending some time talking with people who were there at the airport, departed for the airstrip at Green River, Utah. About 45 minutes later, the pilot returned to Price, and while on an extended final to runway 18, the aircraft hit the electrical wires, which are strung between unlighted poles.
It was later determined that the runway lights at Green River were not functioning at the time that the accident aircraft would have arrived there. It was also noted that although runway 36 at Price has a VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator), runway 18 does not have such a device. NTSB Identification: SEA07LA177
