After two recent landing accidents Montreal-based Bombardier is recommending that some of its Q-400 turboprop planes be grounded and inspected. The decision was made after two emergency landings within a seven day period involving commercial airline operations. Wednesday morning, a Scandinavian Airlines Q-400 skidded off the runway and smashed one wing into the ground after the plane's right-side landing gear failed to lower during an emergency landing in Vilnius, Lithuania. Luckily, none of the 52 onboard was hurt. Three days earlier a Q-400 carrying 73 people caught fire after a crash landing. Both aircraft were operated by Scandinavian Airlines.
The decision to ground and inspect aircraft with more than 10,000 landings is a joint decision by Montreal-based Bombardier and gear manufacturer Goodrich Corporation. Approximately 60 of the 160 Q-400’s in use by airlines worldwide are affected. Scandinavian Airlines has grounded its entire fleet of turboprops following the recommendation. |
