PAUL BENHOMME WINS SECOND RACE OF RED BULL AIR RACES
Sunday, 04 May 2008
Britain’s Paul Bonhomme defeated American Mike Mangold in San Diego on Sunday in a dramatic showdown in the final between the two best Red Bull Air Race pilots of the last two seasons. Kirby Chambliss of the United States grabbed third place by beating Hannes Arch of Austria in the Third Place Fly-Off.
Bonhomme, who was beaten by Mangold by a fraction of a second for the 2007 championship, gained a measure of revenge on his American rival with a close victory in the final in front of a crowd of 63,000 spectators watching from the shores of San Diego Bay.
Bonhomme now leads the championship with 18 points following his victory over Arch in the first race of the season three weeks ago in Abu Dhabi. Mangold is second with 15 points. The third race in the 10-race season is in Detroit in three weeks.
