On May 4, 2008, about 1130 eastern daylight time, a Garrett Gerald amateur built Cozy Mark IV, N14GG, registered to and operated by a commercial pilot, ditched in the ocean about 3 miles off the southern coast of Jekyll Island, Georgia. The personal flight was operated under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 with no flight plan filed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The commercial pilot received fatal injuries. The airplane was substantially damaged. The flight departed Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, Brunswick, Georgia, on May 4, 2008, at an undetermined time.
According to an FAA Inspector, Air Traffic Control received a telephone call from an unidentified witness that an aircraft was seen going down into the ocean on fire, about 3 miles off the coast of Jekyll Island. Air Traffic Control notified the Coast Guard who recovered the pilot but not the airplane. According to the FAA Inspector, there were several witnesses to the accident, but none have come forward. The Inspector asked a local reporter to place his name and phone number in the paper and ask for witnesses to contact him. To date, no eye witnesses have come forward.
