The increasing number of accidents in recent years on MU-2B series airplanes prompted the FAA to conduct a thorough and complete safety evaluation involving not only a review of the certification aspects of the airplane, but also including a review of operations, maintenance and training.
The FAA's analysis found that compared to similar twin-turboprop airplanes, the MU-2B accident rate is approximately twice as high. The fatal rate is 2.5 times higher, while fatal accident rates in icing conditions are four times higher. An MU-2B pilot is seven times more likely to lose control and have a fatal accident during an emergency compared to pilots flying similar type airplanes in similar situations. Recommendations are as follows: · Specific pilot training and testing of the pilot’s skills. · Specific maintenance training. · FAA-approved standardized pilot checklist. · The latest revisions to the maintenance manual and the AFM.
The complete safety report addresses the outstanding issues and attempts to resolve these issues. |
