NTSB Identification: SEA08LA127 14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation Accident occurred Friday, May 09, 2008 in Kent, WA Aircraft: Thorp T-18, registration: N8613A Injuries: 1 Fatal. This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed. On May 9, 2008, at 1645 Pacific daylight time, an experimental Thorp T-18, N8613A, collided with a residence after a reported loss of engine power during the initial climb after takeoff from Crest Airpark, Kent, Washington. The pilot, who was also the registered owner of the airplane, was operating it under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The airline transport pilot, the sole occupant, was killed. The sole occupant of the residence was not injured. The airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed.
According to witnesses at the airpark, the pilot was departing from runway 33 for a local flight. As the airplane neared the end of the usable runway surface, the engine lost power. The airplane then turned, slowed, and collided with a residence.
Federal Aviation Administration inspectors indicated that the airplane impacted a residence located east of the airpark. All control surfaces remained attached to the structure and the wreckage was confined to the impact area. The fuselage was consumed in a post impact fire.
The wreckage was recovered for further examination.
