Solar Powered Aircraft Revealed |
Monday, 29 June 2009 |
Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg today unveiled, at Dübendorf airfield close to Zurich, the Solar Impulse HB-SIA, the first aircraft designed to fly both day and night without fossil fuel or pollution. Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg first retraced the history of the project since it was launched in 2003. 6 years of intense work, calculations, simulations and tests were needed by the 70-person team to complete this totally unprecedented aircraft: with the wingspan of a Boeing 747-400 and the weight of an average family car (1600 kg), never has such a large craft been built with such low weight. Over 12,000 solar cells mounted onto the wing will supply renewable energy to the four electric motors with a maximum power of 10 HP each. During the day they will also charge the lithium-polymer batteries (400 kg), which will permit the HB-SIA to fly through the night. |

Monday, 15 June 2009 |
Britain's Paul Bonhomme soared to victory in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship on Sunday with a thrilling win over rival Hannes Arch of Austria in Windsor, Ontario. It was Bonhomme’s ninth career triumph and put him just one point behind Austria’s Hannes Arch in the championship. Even though most of the frontrunners struggled to avoid penalties on the windy, turn-filled course straddling the Canada-U.S. border on the Detroit River, Bonhomme managed to fly a series of flawless runs to the Final 4 and was then once again in a class by himself, posting a winning time of 1:08.16 on the 15-gate course. Arch was second, 1.15 seconds behind, and Chambliss took third. Canada’s Pete McLeod got the first championship point of his rookie career with 11th place to the delight of the big home crowd of 215,000. |

Red Bull Air Races - Windsor |
Friday, 12 June 2009 |
Canadian and American race fans on both sides of the Detroit River felt the buzz and excitement of the Red Bull Air Races even before the first race began. Precision flying skills and daring manoeuvres usually are not required till Qualifying Day but this year’s third of six stops in the Red Bull Air Race circuit got off to any early start. The grandfather of the Red Bull Air Races, Peter Besenyei was eliminated early from the completion when he experienced an engine failure and was forced to land his airplane one mile short of the airport in a farmers’ field. Besenyei was able to dead stick his crippled aircraft to the field but ended up flipping the aircraft and ending any chance of racing on the weekend. Besenyei was uninjured. |
