 Professional pilots are required to track their duty times in an effort to reduce the risk of errors that may be brought on due to pilot fatigue. No such mechanism formally exists for private pilots but then again, seldom do most private pilots fly long enough to warrant one. But that’s not to say that there isn’t a point where the skills and attentiveness of a non-professional pilot, not used to a long and taxing day of flying, might begin to suffer. On any given day, how much flying is too much? |

LORAN-C Termination Information |

 The Coast Guard published a Federal Register notice on Jan. 7, 2010, regarding its intention to terminate transmission of the LORAN-C signal Feb. 8, 2010. A LORAN Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement Record of Decision stating that the environmentally preferred alternative is to decommission the LORAN-C Program and terminate the North American LORAN-C signal was published in the Federal Register on Jan. 7, 2010.
The Homeland Security Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010 allowed for termination of the LORAN-C signal on January 4, 2010, after certification from the Commandant of the Coast Guard that it was not needed for maritime navigation and from the Secretary of DHS that it is not needed as a backup for GPS. Full details are contained in Section 559 of this act which can be found at the Government Printing Office website.

 Plans are under way to construct the highest airport in the world in Nagqu, Tibet. Construction is scheduled to start in 2011 at Nagqu about 186 miles from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.
The altitude of the airport is approximately 4,436 metres (14,500ft). The airport will be just 764 metres lower than the Mount Everest base camp on the Chinese side, which is located 5,200 metres above sea level.
Construction is expected to take three years. |

American Airlines Flight 331 carrying 148 passengers plus 6 crew skidded off the runway in Kingston Jamaica during a landing in heavy rain last night. The aircraft stopped just short of the Caribbean Sea and all passengers and crew were able to evacuate safely. |

The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy are searching for survivors from a collision between a C-130 plane carrying seven people and a Marine Corps helicopter carrying two others 80 kilometres off the San Diego coast and 24 kilometres east of San Clemente Island. Space shuttle Endeavour's STS-127 launch today was officially scrubbed at 1:55 a.m. EDT when the same type of gaseous hydrogen leak was detected at the Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate, or GUCP. This is the same location where a similar leak resulted in a launch scrub on June 13. |
